In 1898 Mr. John M.
Hooper, Sr. started the Hooper Grocery Company, a wholesale distributor of
groceries, wines and spirits located on 2nd Avenue North in Nashville,
Tennessee.
"Mr. Jack" ran the
company until his death in the early 1930's at which point his son, Russell W.
Hooper, became owner and operator.
Through the prohibition
years, sales of wine and spirits ceased. July 1, 1939, prohibition was lifted
in Tennessee, and it was then that Russell Hooper sold Hooper Grocery and
formed the Tennessee Wine and Spirits Company, a wholesale distributor of fine
wines and spirits.
In 1961, Russell Hooper
died unexpectedly leaving his brother-in-law, Tom Griscom, to serve as general
manager until 1976 when John M. Hooper, II (Jack) and Russell W. Hooper, Jr.
bought the ownership interests of Tennessee Wine and Spirits. Jack served as
president from that point until 2002 when his son John III assumed the
presidency representing the 4th generation Hooper to lead the company.
For over 105 years the
mission of our company has not changed. While recognizing and honoring the
value of each company staff member, we represent and distribute the finest
wines and spirits and provide our customers the service and support they need
and deserve.
Our company will always
remain flexible by adjusting to changing market conditions and consumer
demands; however the values which have been the backbone of Tennessee Wine and
Spirits Company will never change.
